4 ways to honor RBG that actually make a difference

Well, shit. So that happened and its awful. A fearless warrior goddess nobody saw coming, Ruth Bader Ginsburg blazed trails for women. She set new bars and she busted through glass ceilings nobody before her had. May she rest in peace.

She embodied the fight for equality and inclusion. She fought to provide a voice for those who didn’t have one.

And she spent her last days doing the work that needed to be done. She loved our democracy. She fought for it. She saw the threat of the current administration for what it is: fascism thinly disguised as patriotism. And that is what is on the ballot in November. Fascism or freedom.

While the political scene quickly devolved into pointing fingers, name-calling across the aisle, and maneuvering to attempt to stack the court with another conservative-leaning judge, I spent some time thinking about how we, warrior goddesses in our own right, can honor her by carrying on her work and making a difference.

So I’ve put together this list of ways you can get involved or honor RBG and make a difference in our country at the same time. Sharing a post or meme is great, but it does literally nothing to change the outcome of the pending election or influence politicians. So please please please, in addition to posting online, take ACTUAL ACTION.

Send a Letter or Email to Your Representatives to Delay a Vote for Supreme Court Justice

Precedent was set in 2016 by Republican Mitch ‘I look like an evil fucking turtle’ McConnell to delay the appointment of a Supreme Court vacancy during an election year. And that is what we’re asking for right now.

You can use this super simple Resist Bot to automatically send emails on your behalf to your reps by texting ‘RBG’ to 50409. You will just be asked to provide your name, address and email so that the emails are sent to the correct representative. It takes literally 2 minutes of your time and is the least you can do, but still has an enormous impact. And then share that info with everyone you know.

Go Fucking Vote

Seriously. If you hate the way our country is heading straight into fascism, go vote. In 2016, so many people didn’t vote because they thought there was no way Trump could get elected. They thought he was a joke. They assumed everyone else would vote, so their one vote wouldn’t make a difference.

In the 2016 election, the highest demographic of voter turnout was people 65 years and older (71% of votes cast), compared to only 46% of votes cast by 18-29 year olds. Only 12% of votes cast were from non-Hispanic black voters compared to 73% of votes cast coming from non-Hispanic white voters.

Motherfucking old white boomers got their way in that election, and we have nobody to blame but ourselves if we don’t show up and vote. If you want your demographic to be represented, start with yourself.

Help Others Vote

So let’s say you did vote. And let’s say you’re planning to vote this year, too. What about your family, friends, neighbors, and anyone else in an under-represented demographic? Have you checked on them to make sure they’ve either requested their mail-in ballot or have reliable transportation to the polls on Tuesday, November 3rd 2020?

Can you help younger people in your area or in under-represented demographic groups register to vote? Join or support an organization like League of Women Voters or Let America Vote to level the playing field and help to fight voter suppression.

If you or someone you know is not yet registered to vote, or you think you or someone you know may have been removed from voting rolls in your or their precinct, you can go to https://www.vote.org/voter-registration-deadlines/ to see what the deadline is in your state to register to vote and what is required to register. Most states offer online registration.

Can you provide rides to disadvantaged people in your area?

Can you work with local officials to guarantee safe and no- or low-cost public transportation to the polls for people who wish to vote in person?

Can you help collect ballots from people who are homebound?

Can you think of other ways you can increase voter turnout in minority, women, and younger age groups to really turn the tides this election season? Get involved any way you can.

Inform Yourself About Gender Equality Cases

In case you’re like most people and just don’t have time to keep up with the latest in the fight for gender equality, you can take a look at past cases that went to the Supreme Court about gender equality issues by going here: https://civilrights.findlaw.com/discrimination/gender-discrimination-u-s-supreme-court-cases.html

You can also head over to the ACLU’s Women’s Rights page and take a look at past and present efforts, facts about gender equality and discrimination, and the pending cases and legislation on these topics.

I also highly encourage you to donate, even if its just a few dollars a month. If we all did that, it would have a huge impact on their efforts, and not only do they fight for gender equality, but they are huge proponents of racial equality, LGBTQ rights, human rights, and so many other critical issues that we need to preserve in our democratic system.

And then please share this post with anyone who needs this information. This year, more than ever, democracy and American freedoms are at stake and we have to get involved. Nobody has the luxury of just not getting involved anymore.

goddess spotlight: carmenta

Originally a Greek goddess named Nicostrata, Carmenta was renamed as such as a Roman goddess, where she ruled over childbirth and midwives. She is also invoked for contraceptive purposes for women who wish to avoid pregnancy. She is also a protector of mothers and children.

She is also the goddess of divination and prophecy, and her name comes from the Latin word carmen, which means spell or oracle.

She is also associated with poetry, and writing in general, as she is said to have been who altered 15 of the letters in the Greek alphabet to become the Latin alphabet. She also introduced poetry and music to the early peoples inhabiting what would later become modern-day Italy, and is even said to have laid some of the physical foundations of the city of Rome.

She is the mother of Evander by Hermes.

Also associated with bodies of water, as she was the primary or leader of the Camenae, who were water goddesses or nymphs who ruled over springs and wells, as well as larger bodies of water in and around Rome. Because of this association, she and the other three Camenae (Egeria, Porrima, Postverta), could also be invoked for healing.

The next in the series of ‘when timing matters’ in magick: Wednesday. What types of magick are best to perform on a Wednesday, regardless of moon phase or time of year?

Planetary Correspondence to Wednesday

Mercury is the planet associated or corresponding to Wednesday on the calendar. Mercury energy is intellectual, artistic, psychic, and governs communication.

Wednesday is also most closely associated with the element air, which relates to knowledge, enlightenment, wisdom, and especially writing. Mercury is also associated with healing, travel, learning, and teaching, so these can be combined to do powerful workings involving health, poetry or creative writing, psychic development, and acquiring knowledge.

It is the 3rd day of the week (in the traditional calendar format which began the week on Monday), so is associated with the number 3 numerology.

Magickal Symbolism of the Iris

This flower is found in depictions and art dating back to as far back as people drew flowers. Renowned the world over for its beauty and sensuality, the iris features in many magickal or spiritual contexts, as well.

Irises are some of the first flowers to bloom in the spring, symbolizing transformation, renewal, and hope. They are brightly colored and showy, reminding us to show up for ourselves, and to let our own true colors shine.

And, irises are here to remind us of our own sensuality. Their leaves are harsh, sharp, and phallic, juxtaposed next to the soft, delicate, and sensual petals opening in layers, just like a vulva. In fact, it is common in many cultures, such as Japan, to drink tea of iris petals and bathe in a bath of iris blossoms to ensure virility and good health.

Irises were planted on the graves of women in Greece, so that their souls could be guided by the goddess Iris, who shuttled them between the physical world and the Elysian fields of the afterlife. The goddess Iris was the female equivalent of Hermes, with her own wings and caduceus. Her symbol was the rainbow, which was how she traveled between the Earth and Olympus.

Irises are also considered protective, especially against disease and evil spirits. The flower can be planted on the sides of your porch or front door to ward off spirits and misfortune, and to welcome prosperity and protection. The blossoms are also placed upon the roofs of homes in Japan to protect against evil spirits.

The iris is also the flower depicted in the French fleur de lis, and the three petals of the flower shown symbolize faith, wisdom, and valor.

Irises can be found in virtually every hue of the spectrum, and, depending on what color they are, can symbolize more specific things for you beyond just beauty, transformation, femininity, balance, hope, and power.

What can’t the iris be for you? …that’s probably a better question, because these powerful and unique flowers are excellent for all kinds of spiritual or magickal uses.

Here are just a few suggestions:

  • use a red iris in love spells, especially those involving passion or lust
  • use an orang iris for friendships, knowledge, and educational pursuits
  • use an yellow iris for creativity and inspiration
  • use a green iris for money, finance, and career spells
  • use a blue iris for communication or psychic dreams
  • use a purple iris for power, intuition, or connection to your higher self
  • use a black or white iris for protection
  • use a white iris for purification or protection
  • use any color iris for good health, beauty, lust/sexuality, and confidence

8 magickal uses of labradorite

Labradorite is often referred to as the ’empath’s stone’ as it can help to filter emotions and many empaths like me find that it aids them in this.

Labradorite and the Aura

Part of the reason why labradorite aids in filtering emotional energy is that it is an aura-balancing stone and has protective properties. If you are particularly sensitive to emotional (or psychic) energy, keep a piece of labradorite around and program it to filter out only that which you want to receive.

Labradorite and Chakras

This is an excellent crystal to work with the higher chakras (throat, third eye, and crown). It can help to develop and use psychic abilities and can be used while meditating or doing chakra opening exercises if you are trying to enhance or clarify any clairs (clairvoyance, clairsentience, etc) you possess.

Labradorite and Empaths

Labradorite is also known as the ’empath’s stone’ by some, because it has a number of properties that aid empaths in protection, filtering, and strengthening emotional reading. Often carried near or on the body or worn as jewelry, it can protect one’s aura from emotional or energetic turbulence or imbalances coming your way.

Labradorite and Grounding

I’ve written briefly before about the importance of centering and grounding, and it just can’t be overstated that every witch, energy worker, or person meditating/traveling the astral should master centering and grounding before attempting deeper states of consciousness or spiritual communication. Grounding acts as a connection to the physical for our spirit and astral body, and can help to protect us (or help us protect ourselves) from low or negative energetic states or entities. Labradorite can be used for grounding before any of those activities.

Labradorite and Personal Power

This crystal also helps us find and step into our personal power by encouraging or inspiring us to trust our own abilities and power. This is a critical component of any energy or magickal working. If you need a little boost of self-confidence, consider bringing some labradorite into your life!

Labradorite and Inspiration

If you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, labradorite is also an excellent crystal with which to work to open up new ideas, new avenues, new ways of thinking, and find new paths you hadn’t seen before. Consider keeping a piece on your desk or wearing labradorite jewelry when journaling, writing, being creative, or other activities you want to stimulate creativity.

Labradorite and Dreams

You can use labradorite to enhance or strengthen psychic dreams or connect with higher consciousness while dreaming. Place it next to your bed or even under your pillow to stimulate the third eye and crown chakras.

Labradorite and Negative Energy or Thoughts

Similar to its ability to bolster your self trust or personal power, labradorite is a powerful crystal for blocking negative energy or even negative thoughts. Its a great stone for keeping a positive attitude, keeping your personal energy field clear and positive, and finding strong light energy wherever you bring it.

how to work with a pendulum

Pendulums are perhaps one of the easiest divination methods you can start with, as they require no memorization complex imagery or symbolism, and they can be effectively employed for a variety of uses, not just ‘yes/no’ questions, either.

What You Can Use as a Pendulum

You do not need to spend a lot of money to buy a special pendulum, although you certainly can.

If you are short on funds, you can simply use anything that you can attach and suspend on the end of a string, chain, yarn, or other length of something from which it can freely dangle.

Here are some things I have used, or know people who have used, and they’ve all worked well:

  • a pendant necklace, especially if it has a stone or crystal that comes to a point, or has a narrower end pointing down
  • a key tied to a piece of string
  • a small rock that you can tie onto a string or yarn
  • a cross hanging from something
  • an earring with a metal or stone/crystal hanging from it
  • you probably get the idea now

Essentially, as long as whatever you suspend from the end of the string, cord, or chain can freely move and is not impeded or otherwise affected by its shape, the chain/string/yarn, then you can likely use it as a pendulum.

Consecrating Your Pendulum

I prefer to designate my pendulum for this specific purpose, once I finally purchased one that was an actual pendulum. Before, that, however, I used a carnelian stone pendant necklace, and would usually cleanse it prior to and after use, so that I could also still wear it when I wanted without the sticky energies that you may or may not pick up with a pendulum from time to time.

I wrote this post on consecrating magickal tools, so I won’t recap that here, but will just say its generally good practice to consecrate something that you will be dedicating to this purpose.

Do You Need to Cleanse Your Pendulum?

Believe it or not, there is some controversy here. I know psychic mediums that say no, if you’re using a crystal/mineral-based pendulum dedicated to that purpose, pendulums are self-cleaning, similar to selenite crystals.

Others I know state that you should cleanse it before and after use, using salt water.

I would say that I can feel when there is energy sticking to my pendulum that I do not want, and I will cleanse it then. You can physically cleanse it, or psychically cleanse it, whichever you prefer.

If you prefer to psychically cleanse it, my method that I find works especially well is to center and ground myself well, first. Once I feel a nice strong connection of roots to the earth, I grasp the pendulum in my dominant hand, then visualize drawing up rushing underground water energy, let it flow up my roots, into my base chakra, up through the rest of my chakras, and visualize it circulating up and down my chakras for about 30 seconds, to clean them.

Then I push the swirling water out toward my exterior, letting it flow around me in a whirling manner. I am cleansing my aura here. Once I feel as if I have effectively done both of those things, I send the water down my arm into my hand where the pendulum is, and swirl it around that, washing, cleansing, and purifying it. I direct that water, and all the rest, back down my chakras, through my root, then down through the roots I am connecting to the earth.

Once all the water has ‘flushed’ and drained, I fill the pendulum back up with my energy, any specific instructions I have for it, and thank it for helping me. Fairly simple. I would like to note that I have a LOT of water in my chart, so water is one of the elements I most comfortably visualize. Feel free to substitute one you feel more comfortable with if you use this method.

Back to the question of cleansing, though. Depending on what you are doing with your pendulum and whether you are performing a banishing beforehand, or using in a space that is well warded vs not warded, and who/what you are contacting or attempting to contact to communicate through your pendulum, you may want to cleanse it afterward.

A friend of mine does not cleanse her pendulums that are crystal/minerals, but does cleanse other items such as keys, jewelry, etc.

The bottom line is, you’ll feel it if it needs to be cleansed and if your intuition tells you to cleanse it, then do.

How to Use Your Pendulum

Now that we got the formalities out of the way, here’s what you probably came for. Whether or not you cast a circle is entirely up to you, but I would at least recommend doing a basic banishing if you are seeking contact with spirits for communication, as well as setting some ground rules for your session.

Ground rules are where you specify who can and cannot be present to communicate with you in your space. I use a statement such as “Only those spirits or beings with my highest good in mind or who seek only to help me may enter my space today. Those who wish me harm or have ill intent may not enter.”

You can come up with your own variation that, depending on your situation. If you’re trying to contact Grandma Sue and in life she hated you and you hated her, then she’s not gonna be much different in death and that statement would effectively bar her from communicating, so just keep that in mind.

You could decide whether you want to cleanse yourself and your space, and to what degree. I will usually have some incense going in my space for a good 10-15 min prior to a session, to get it nice and comfortable, as well as create a welcoming environment for spirit guides and ancestors.

If you are new to using a pendulum, you’ve probably purchased, printed, or drawn a pendulum answer board. I would recommend avoiding this at first until you know how your pendulum will work with you.

Figure out your ‘yes’ and ‘no’ responses

To figure out your ‘yes’ and ‘no’ answers, get something flat and circular, or draw a circle on a piece of paper. Hold the pendulum up over the circle, keep your elbow free from being pinned to any surfaces or your side (these can actually impede your energy flow through your arm) and out loud or in your head state “show me ‘yes’ in a circle.’

Whichever way the pendulum spins for you is your ‘yes’ response. Regardless of whether it is clockwise or counterclockwise. And, whichever way it spins for you will be the way that all pendulums will spin for you for that response.

At this point, I like to just check that answer with another statement “show me ‘no’ in a circle.” It should be the opposite direction of how your ‘yes’ response moved, but every once in a while someone gets either no response or the same.

Go back and double check your ‘yes’ a couple times to be sure, then make sure you are loose, not tense, take a few deep breaths, and stop trying to overthink it. These are usually the reason behind getting no response or unclear movement from a pendulum.

At this point, you can begin asking questions, or welcome any spirits you have asked to be present to communicate with, etc.

Using a Pendulum for Questions with Answers Other Than Yes and No

You can get other answers from a pendulum, and you don’t even need to have a fancy pendulum board, however, you can use one if you’d like.

Here are some alternatives to just yes and no questions:

  • use a pendulum with a Ouija board, moving the pendulum across the letters and making note of the ones where it begins to spin in the direction of your ‘yes’ response
  • make a chart with numbers in intervals of 10, as percentages and ask what is the likelihood some particular event will take place
  • write on a piece of paper a number of options among which you are trying to decide which is the best and ask which to choose, the pendulum will spin in your ‘yes’ direction on the best option
  • use it to locate a lost item; walk through your space and ask where your lost item is, watch for the pendulum to spin in the location it was last in
  • use it to clear energy in a space; I have not personally use it for this, but do know of people who use it to remove negative or stagnant energy in a location; it will begin to spin rapidly when it encounters energy that needs to be removed, cleansing the space for you

How to Close a Pendulum Session

Everyone seems to have their own preferred method for this and I think there will be variables you should consider when deciding how to close your session.

If you are not contacting anyone in particular, but merely asking questions about a decision or event, simply thank the pendulum and mentally close down or end the session and ground yourself.

If you are working with spirit guides or ancestors, its good practice to thank them and say something along the lines of ‘go if you must, stay if you will.’

If you are working with a deity as part of a larger ritual, spell, or offering/dedication, its always good practice to thank them and leave an offering they like. Deities will generally communicate how they prefer to be thanked and what offerings they like, but you can find a lot of information online about this.

Also, generally its not good etiquette to dismiss a deity, rather you will want to thank them and say that you are done asking questions and that they are free to go. Banishing them is considered rude, unless for some reason you feel uncomfortable or threatened, and then, perhaps, this may not be for you.

If you question whether the spirit you are communicating with is truly who they say they are, or whether their intentions are benevolent toward you, its probably best to ask them to leave, cleanse your space, and make sure you’ve appropriately warded your space (if you are using your pendulum somewhere that can be warded), or perhaps create stronger ground rules next time.

There are so many different types of pendulums and what they can be made of, so I won’t go into that in this post, but perhaps in a future post I will discuss the strengths if using a particular type of pendulum vs others.

remove your ego from your practice and become a better witch

I want to share some thoughts based on a discussion I had the other day with my husband. He had been reading Ego is the Enemy, by Ryan Holiday. It’s a great book, and one I recommend all the time, regardless of whether you’re on a magickal, occult, or spiritual path at all.

But especially if you’re on a magickal, occult, or spiritual path. So, let’s talk about ego in magick or the occult.

Ego is something I see in a ton of new witches, but experienced ones alike. I see it in witches of all paths and cultures. Its not something that anyone is immune to. I had to battle with it myself when I first started this journey, and do occasionally still have to check my ego from time to time.

But why I’m writing this is the simple fact that so many of us could be doing so much better if we would completely remove ourselves from the equation. What I mean by that is that 90+% of the time, something someone said to you or did to you has nothing to do with you at all.

That person is miserable, unhappy, chaotic, or otherwise struggling to hold on, and you were just convenient.

They may have bad or destructive habits that affect you, but they’re not consciously trying to affect you. They’re just not in control and they’re projecting all that out around them to whatever and whoever is closest.

Most of the time, you don’t even need to be involved in anyone else’s bullshit. Most of the time, you’re focusing on what others are doing and how you think they think about you, instead of fixing the way you think about yourself.

Someone called you a name on the internet? It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them being a shitty, small, insecure person. Someone gave you the evil eye? It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with their ego and pettiness. And so on. You get the picture.

And you continue to feed their ego when you continue to let them affect you. Your own ego drives this.

What is Ego?

Let me go here for a minute so we’re all on the same page with what I’m referring to.

Dictionary. com defines this in two ways:

the “I” or self of any person; a person as thinking, feeling, and willing, and distinguishing itself from the selves of others and from objects of its thought.

Psychoanalysis: the part of the psychic apparatus that experiences and reacts to the outside world and thus mediates between the primitive drives of the id and the demands of the social and physical environment.

In this post, I’m referring to the second definition, as it pertains to psychoanalysis. The ego is the sense of self-importance.

Self-Importance Will Ruin Your Magick

Of course you should be the most important person in your life. So this isn’t some diatribe on always putting others first. Put yourself first almost all of the time, and help others as much as you can without depleting yourself in the process.

Many of us find, choose, or stumble upon this path because we feel pulled or called to it. Or maybe they are healers of one kind and decide the magickal or spiritual healing path is better suited to them.

Others because its something they’ve grown up with in their family or culture. And others, still, because they want to obtain power, influence, material wealth, exact revenge, or some other reason of personal gain.

Whatever the reason, we’re here now. But the last group, let’s be real. There’s a little bit of this in all of us.

Who hasn’t at least once wanted to be more skilled, more powerful, wealthier (crystals are fucking expensive ok), or some other intent that centers around a personal or selfish desire?

And that’s okay. Its human nature to want to fulfill your basic human needs like shelter, food, warmth, and socialization. Not mad at anyone ’cause this is me, too.

But then we all know at least one person (or maybe its our own self) that is on this path to seek power and control. They’re driven by their ego’s need to be recognized as important. They won’t think twice about throwing a curse. Their only end goal is to be smarter, more skilled, more whatever than everyone else, simply to be able to say they are and have control. They prefer being feared to being respected.

And everything with those people is personal. You know exactly what I mean. They constantly think someone is criticizing them, trying to curse them, doesn’t like them, is a threat to them, is attacking their ideas, and so on and so forth.

This person’s ego is massive. They are incredibly self-important. And its 1000% preventing this person from truly realizing spiritual enlightenment.

I can guarantee you that the more you think of yourself as better, and the more reactive you are to what others say and do, the more you limit your own growth. The minute you head down this path of thinking, you effectively shut off the access your spirit has to higher consciousness.

You are literally what is standing in your own way.

The biggest lesson in this is that you, yes you, are connected to everything. And everyone. We are all one big ‘All One’ of energy. So, when you energetically send your ego after someone, the ripples effect you just as much.

And I’m not talking about the rule of 3. I’m talking about energetic connectedness. Every effort you put into caring what someone said or did, you create an energetic bridge to them, and you just keep on laying bricks down across it for as long as you care.

What if You Stop Giving a Fuck?

This is where my life changed dramatically. And if I can pass on one tip as my legacy to new witches it is this. Stop giving a fuck about literally everyone else. Your family, your partner, your boss, your kids. Remove all them for a second and look at just you. Just who and what you are.

What would make you happy (extremely, truly, unreservedly, unapologetically, ecstatically happy) with yourself so that you can achieve anything in life you want? Do you need any of those other people’s opinions to get there?

How much time does your brain spend per day occupied with other people compared to occupied with you?

This is where we differentiate between loving yourself and knowing that you are valuable and important, yet at the same time insignificant in the greater picture, as are we all…

and

being self-important, thinking everything should revolve around you, using people, looking down on others, letting insecurity guide your decisions and reactions, or generally being self-centered to the extent of unnecessarily and excessively harming others in the process.

Option A is where we remove ego and act from a place of realizing that every action, thought, and spoken word has power over others, but also over us.

Every time I throw shade on someone, I’m throwing a little back on myself. Every time I worry about someone’s opinion of me, I hand them power over me. Every time I don’t live to fulfill my own happiness, I am telling myself that I don’t matter to anyone, especially me.

So, what I’m saying here is not to not do magick for yourself. Always do magick for yourself, and for others if you can.

But if you approach magick and spirituality with the mindset that the vast majority of the time, you do not need to be involved in whatever energetic bullshit is dragging other people down, and you don’t need to take things personally, and you do not have to let someone affect you if you don’t want them to, its like the best fucking energetic shield you can conjure.

Start asking this one question every time you feel yourself getting ready to react to someone or something: Is this really even about me? And is it my responsibility to do something about this?

I think you’ll find you free yourself of many energetic burdens and connections you’ve likely been carrying around for a while.

magickal symbolism of the cow

There are few animals as revered, worshipped, symbolized, and even spiritually elevated as the cow. Across the globe, this ruminant has been featured in almost every culture’s mythology.

In this post, I’ll be discussing just the cow, not the bull, as their symbolism is quite different in most cultures.

It is likely that the cow featured so prominently in spiritual or mythological symbolism due to its many beneficial products which can be derived of it or its body.

The cow provides milk, butter, cheese, meat, hide, and even fertilizer in the form of its manure- all of which could be obtained for nothing more than some pasture land on which to graze, or regular hay or grasses.

And, if that’s not enough, she provided calves, which could be raised, bred, and therefore produce additional cows and bulls, sustaining the human societies who domesticated them.

Because of its extreme value in that respect, it was common to see prices for every major purchase (including people) in the prices of cows or head of cows.

The cow symbolizes life, fertility, motherhood, maternal instinct, reproduction,

Tales of the Cow

There are probably tales of cows in every culture, however, there are several which stand out or are more well-known, probably only because of better historical documentation preservation in those parts of the world.

Cows and the Norse

The Norse primeval cow Audhumla licked away salt blocks, to reveal Buri, the ancestor of the gods. Her milk fed the frost giant Ymir, from whose body the world was formed. This may be where the term ‘Milky Way’ came from, in reference to the galaxy in which our planet resides, however, it is difficult to attribute this to only the Norse stories of the cow.

Cows and the Egyptians

The Egyptian cow-headed goddess Hathor is one of the most prominent in the Khemetic pantheon or path. She gave birth to the son, which was her ‘golden calf,’ and her horns were the crescent of the moon. You may also see this goddess referred to as Ahet. Amulet’s with the head of Hathor or Ahet were worn by women in the Nile Valley to ensure fertility.

There is a triple goddess in the combination of Hathor, Isis, and Nut, representing the heavens, the underworld, and the earth in between.

Cows in India

The Hindu religion includes Dharma, the cow which represents the four stages, or cosmic ages (yugas), the world went through (and is currently in the last stage, the most unstable).

The cow enjoys a peaceful and free existence still today in India, due to its sacred status. The cow is also associated with the god Krishna, who was a young cowherd. They are considered the rain which fertilizes the Earth and the clouds which contain the water of heaven. They were even brought to the bedside of those who were dying, in order to allow them guidance into the afterlife.

Cows in Mesopotamia and Sumer

These often get grouped together as they developed overlapping in this region of the world. Cows were depicted as the Great Mother or Great Cow, and thought to have fed the waters of the Nile and other major life-bringing rivers of the region with their milk.

The cow was very much associated with fertility goddesses in this region. They may have been associated with either or both the Sun (as in Egypt) and the Moon. The cow’s horns were depicted along with or cradling the crescent or full moon.

Cows and Buddhism

Similar to the Hindu approach to cow veneration, Buddhists (many of whom practice vegetarianism and consider it taboo to eat a cow) will often say that to take care of a cow, is to take care of all living things.

Cows in Buddhism were also venerated because they may be the souls of those trying to ascend to higher spiritual incarnations, therefore, if they are killed and eaten, so is the soul within it.

Cows and Magick

History of the cow aside, you may now have a better idea of what the cow symbolizes, therefore, you can probably think of some ways you can use this symbolism in your spiritual or magickal practice:

  • use bones (please obtain them ethically) from a cow in spells, charms, or other works for fertility and abundance
  • use milk in spells for fertility, abundance, peace, motherhood/parenting
  • use milk or cow bones to ask for fertility in a new business venture
  • take a milk bath to cleanse, purify, or uncross yourself
  • add a splash of milk to your tea spells to give them an abundant boost
  • use milk to anoint spell candles for love or other relationship matters as a protective love-boosting ingredient
  • place a bowl of milk out for stray cats to honor any goddesses such as Bastet, Freya, or Sekhmet

and last, you can simply place a cow image, sculpture, or statue on an altar to any of the deities or spirits associated with cows, such as:

  • Hathor/Ahet
  • Krishna
  • Prithi and Prithva
  • Buddha
  • Nut
  • Neith
  • Damona/Boann (Celtic)
  • Phaethusa (Greek)

goddess spotlight: kuan yin

Kuan Yin is the Chinese goddess of compassion and mercy. She is the protector of the sick, poor, and disabled.

She is also a patron goddess of healing and healers. In an original life, Kuan Yin was a man named Avalokitesvara, who lived a life of suffering. After dying, falling into over a thousand pieces, was reformed into the goddess Kuan Yin.

Kuan Yin is often petitioned with prayers for the dead and with prayers for healing and health.

She is also the Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion as Guan yin.

She is called ‘She who hears the cries of the world,‘ because of her responsiveness to all prayers and deeply compassionate nature.

Due to how appealing she was to those following her, word spread and she became popular and frequently petitioned by other cultures and traditions, accumulating other names in the process, such as Tara and was also synchratized to the Virgin Mary in some Asian cultures.
