a quick guide to candle magick

Candle magick is by far one of the easiest and most accessible forms of spell work. It requires so very little actual items or tools and can be done anywhere.

This will not just be another guide to which color of candle to use for a certain type of spell. This is more a process that you can begin to use right away to implement candle magick easily and safely.

Candles are an inexpensive magickal item and you can even find them at most regular stores, craft stores, and even places like Target. They’re typically cheap, come in a wide range of colors, and maybe even scents.

Besides a candle or a few, you’ll only need something to light it with. That’s it. Anything else you want to include in your candle magick is optional.

How to Perform a Basic Candle Spell

  1. You will need to define a specific outcome that you want. This is your intent. You should be able to write this out in one basic sentence. If you write it out and its more than one sentence or its longer than maybe a standard line on a piece of physical paper, its probably too long.
  2. Your intent should also only contain one outcome or goal. If you make it about two different things, your intent and will may have a hard time finding a specific target and you could risk muddling the results or getting nothing, or, worse yet, things going wrong.
  3. So, be as specific as possible in your intent.

The Candle Spell

  1. Center and ground yourself. (*hint, a wrote a book review previously about Spiritual Protection by Sophie Reicher and she gives very simple and easy to perform centering and grounding technique suggestions, but you can use anything you like that works for you).
  2. Once you feel you have sufficiently arrived into your body, you are focused and have cut the strings attached to whatever you were doing prior to this, let your mind clear, taking deep breaths until you feel your heart rate slow down and you are relaxed.
  3. At this point, you will need to raise energy. You can do this a myriad of ways. Dancing, drumming, singing, listening to music, chanting, visualizing, etc etc.
  4. Once you feel you have sufficiently raised your energy, hold your intended candle in your hands however feels intuitively the most comfortable to you. I like to put one hand above the other along the length of the candle, wrapping fingers tightly around it and pressing it into my palms, covering it completely.
  5. Now, you’ll visualize transferring as much of that wonderful energy you raised into the candle.
  6. As you do so, repeat your phrase of intent or a mantra (I just think it intently over and over, but you can also say it out loud), or simply something that symbolizes your intent. You should feel the energy transferring to the candle.
  7. After a few minutes, there will be a definite point where you feel the energy transfer slow or stop, and the candle has reached its saturation. You can choose to say a few words such as ‘This object now knows its purpose, my will be done’ but you don’t have to.
  8. Place the candle in a safe base and light it. Let it burn all the way down. Make sure you can be near it to monitor that it is safely burning. If you have to leave, blow it out and re-light it when you return, repeating your intent statement mentally or out loud as you light it.

That’s it!

Now, you can of course make this much more elaborate by adding herbs, oils, resins, carvings, symbols, or other things to the candle before lighting it, but it’s not required. If your intent and will are sufficiently infused with the candle, that’s really all you need.

Color Associations

Even though I said this post would really not be about which color candle is best for which type of spell, it also doesn’t hurt to include some basics here so you have it all in one place.

magickal uses of water

I’m a water sign and have a lot of water in my chart, as well, so, naturally, I find watery stuff soothing and appealing, as well as intuitive to work with.

I wanted to put this quick post together for anyone who hasn’t pondered the ways that water can be used in magickal practice, and this is by no means fully comprehensive, but will include probably the most common, as well as few uncommon, ways to use water.

On Your Altar

This is something that probably all of us do almost all the time because its pretty consistently practiced across most magickal path traditions, to have something representing each of the 4 elements on your altar, including just non-work dedication altars to ancestors or deities.

Most people have either a bowl or a chalice with water. Some people even just put a bottle of water on there, and others still, use just any old random cup. I think as long as its symbolically meaningful to you, it probably doesn’t matter what vessel itself is used to hold the water. Some materials are more symbolic than others to a particular deity, but you can customize this many ways. \I bought an inexpensive set of crystal stemware to use for the water offerings on my altars to ancestors and the deities I do any devotional work with, and I think its a nice touch, but I know not everyone has a budget for those things.

I have known people who use a vase of fresh cut flowers in water to represent their water and earth at the same time, which also beautifies the work space or dedication/offering, if that is what the flowers are for you.

For Protection

Water itself is inherently cleansing, but it also absorbs all manner of negative intentions or vibes, if its charged and purposed to do so.

One of the tips that I picked up from Sophie Reicher’s Spiritual Protection (read my review of it from yesterday here) was to keep a bowl of water by your front door when you are anticipating guests. It will help to grab and contain the energies they are bringing into your home, lowering the chances of them leaving behind unwanted and unpleasant energy.

She also mentions sleeping with a glass of fresh water by your bed each night to prevent unwanted spiritual visitors while sleeping. Dump it out into the toilet and flush it each morning after you wake up, then fill with fresh water again before sleeping. This is excellent for hotel rooms or traveling, when you can’t ward your entire space regulary.

Water can also be blessed to function as holy water or sacred water, and you can either purchase it already blessed from a local religious organization or bless it yourself if you feel comfortable doing so. Holy water doesn’t technically have to be blessed by a priest or holy person, there are a number of non-denominational blessings you can find online (there is an excellent one in The Exorcist’s Handbook by Josephine McCarthy!!).

Water can be used to draw protective symbols on thresholds, windows, and mirrors, as well.

And, then water with salt added, particularly if you have also blessed the salt (that same book from McCarthy has blessings for both holy water and sacred salt), can even further add protection. You can use that to clean spaces, sprinkle in corners of rooms when cleansing and purifying, and to discourage evil or malevolent spirits or energies from entering your home or space.

Water can also be infused with various natural substances, like herbs, resins, plants, and crystals to use in spells involving protection, cleansing, abundance, and more. You can do a simple plant infusion by boiling the plant(s) in question in the water for 20 minutes, then removing from the heat, letting it cool to room temp, then straining the solids out and saving the infused water in an airtight jar in your fridge.

That brings me to my next point, which is that water is a purifier. As it is of the earth, and it is both one of the most destructive forces on earth, yet at the same time stimulates and feeds life, it is inherently powerful. Its all about the intent you put into this element.

I like to use spring water for my magickal work, especially that concerning purification, as it has not been adulterated or altered in any way. It is as close to the truest form of water found in the earth as possible, without actually going and collecting water from outdoors. I feel like spring water in a glass bottle retains better energetic properties than that stored in plastic, but in a pinch, again, its about the intent you instill in it.

Water collected from the earth, particularly that of a source of running water or catching rain water as it falls is even better, and even more energetically charged. If you can get that, do it! I know of people that order water from hot springs all over the country specifically for this purpose, if they cannot find any easily accessible sources in their area. You can also very easily set up a collection bowl or jars outdoors during rain to collect that which is free from the sky.

Moon water is a popular type of water used in spells, too. Put a jar or bottle of water out in the moonlight on a full moon (or a windowsill where the moon’s light will hit it) to charge the water with the energy of the full moon.

But, even if you can’t afford spring water in glass bottles regularly, and there is no clean outdoor source of running water near you, tap water is okay. Don’t worry too much about this. If you get hung up on using tap water, thinking its not magickal, then guess what? It’s not magickal. If you doubt yourself, your magick won’t work.

One caution I have is don’t drink water you collect from an outdoor source unless you sanitize it first by boiling it. While those sources are not typically contaminated by stuff we add to municipal water supplies like chlorine or the lead in our pipes, they are usually overflowing with microbes and other substances that may not be the best for you to consume.

I also recently started doing a ritual purification each day using spring water in a bowl with essential oils or my Release spell oil, along with water-safe crystals as a way to freshen myself up energetically for the day. You could easily do this in your bathroom or kitchen sink with the drain stopped, fill it with water and ritually cleanse your hands, arms, face, etc.

As An Offering

Don’t forget your ancestors and deities! A simple act such as filling a fresh goblet or cup of cool water each day for your ancestors and deities can go a long way to keeping them happy, and in your life, and honoring them with your attention.

This is another place I like to use spring water and my line of thinking is that if I can afford it, I can show them they matter to me by purchasing something higher quality, similar to the concept of burning ancestor money. I don’t view it as throwing money away.

Yes, I could use tap water and it wouldn’t cost me anything, but if I’m in a position to purchase spring water, then I should because my ancestors deserve it. If they make my life abundant, I should share some of that abundance and a $2 bottle of spring water each week is one small token of that appreciation. Plus, one of my grandmas is just petty enough to ignore me if she feels like I’m not making the effort lol

Now, please do not interpret that as saying if you don’t use some foo foo spring water, you don’t love your ancestors. Your ancestors know what you can afford and what your situation is. If it is truly a stretch for you, they are not going to get mad about tap water. I have friends who offer tap water and easy mac. Its not gonna be the end of the world.

However, there is no shame in saying to your ancestors, “I really want to be able to offer you more expensive offerings. Can you help me find ways to bring more money into my life, so that I can honor you by sharing it with you?” This works, really. Try it sometime.

But, I think what I’m trying to say about this is if you make 6 figures and your life is materially wealthy and your ancestors get tap water but they know you could be giving them better offerings, maybe don’t skimp. Its my experience that the more thought I put into what I offer them, the more they reciprocate with blessings in my life and my home.

On the subject of offerings, also consider putting a few drops of your favorite (or your deity’s favorite) essential oil into a water offering to add some beautiful or personalized aroma to the altar space.

So, hopefully you can take away some ways to work with the water element daily or in ritual/spell work!

how to create a magick morning ritual for self love

When I initially planned this post, it was simply from the perspective of creating rituals of any level of simplicity or complexity to begin one’s day with an attitude of self love and empowerment.

And, that will be what this is about.

However, after a comment from @clairalchemy on Twitter encouraging me to expand on a comment I made about creating sacred devotional time with my spirit, this sort of morphed into something much larger, which deserves to be more fully developed and structured, perhaps even some kind of template to help others implement this approach and mindset into their lives in an expanded system.

So, be on the lookout for that from me in the coming months, but for now, let’s talk about rituals and self love.

Rituals in Magickal Practice

The term ‘ritual’ may engender visions of arcane and complex undertakings, dark robes, ceremonial sacrifices, and chants in languages you don’t understand.

Or, it might make you think of practicing something many times over in order to perfect it or learn it better.

Or, maybe its a gathering with fellow magick practitioners or pagans wherein you celebrate an important lunar or solar date.

None of these are necessarily wrong, but I want you to step back away from preconceived definitions and ask yourself what rituals you have already created in your day. That is, what things do you do most days, or almost always the same way, or in symbolic honor of something or someone?

Most peoples’ days are not that extremely different and variable, as humans are creatures of habit in many ways. Even the most spontaneous of us still get dressed the same way each day, shower and brush our teeth in a certain order, or eat the same 10-15 foods fairly consistently.

So, its likely you have some rituals already established. Some of them serve you to get to work on time looking professional, others ensure that you complete work effectively, and still others may assist you in caring for family members such as prepping dinner each night or tucking kids into bed.

Rituals in magickal practice are not extremely different in that they follow a certain structure, even if you do not follow a more defined path such as Garderian Wicca or Voudon, its likely that there are certain steps or actions you take before, during, and after all of your rituals, regardless of the purpose or workings contained therein.

For some people, rituals and spells are completely separate undertakings. For others, they intertwine as needed. Wherever you fall in that spectrum, ritual is something that has repeatable elements and builds behaviors that yield change in our lives or our world in some way, either through physical/psychological/spiritual action, or symbolic actions.

Examples of how ritual may impact us include:

  • establishing a deeper connection to external spirits, divinity, source, or ancestors/guides
  • building a community and fellowship with peers when done in social groups
  • sending forth energy in the form of requests, spells, prayers, or workings to affect ourselves and our environment
  • creating subconscious or spiritual connections to actions, elements, ideas, and more in order to grow or change our spiritual or even physical self
  • learning to be more present and focused

There are plenty more ways that ritual practice may affect you, but most importantly, it is time dedicated to a person(s), spirit(s), deity/ies, concept, project, or other pursuit that is a priority to you.

The bottom line I want you to take away is that ritual time is time focused on a person, task, idea, or element, not on distractions that have nothing to do with it. It is devotion of time, action, and thought and being present in the moment.

So, if you consider yourself a priority (and I hope that you do), are you incorporating rituals for yourself?

Self Love and Acceptance Actions Ritualized

For some of us, its not simply enough to think we’re great, the power of a regularly implemented ritual can create magickal ripples of energy flowing from within you to affect your environment, the people around you, and, yes, even the rest of the world.

There are many ways you can practice self love. They don’t all incorporate bubble baths and pedicures. Sometimes the things you may need to do to love yourself are organizing your monthly bills or grocery shopping for fruits and veggies so you can snack on those instead of empty calories like chips.

And yet, still other examples of self love include taking care of your physical body with movement. Do you have an exercise ritual? What about getting outside daily to breathe fresh air? There are plenty of ways you can ritualize this.

Maybe ritualized self love for you is affirmations in the mirror before you get ready for the day. Instead of focusing on what you perceive are your flaws, perhaps you can create statements of self love to repeat out loud before you do your make up and hair?

Embrace the things about yourself you find beautiful, alluring, sensual, special, or otherwise remarkable or unique. Remind yourself about those first thing every day.

Ritualized self love may be a meditation (guided or not) in which you breathe deeply in a quiet space or outdoors, imagining yourself embracing and accepting what you have and what you want, pursuing your goals, and acquiring your desired outcome. Consider it a visualization pep talk.

Or, maybe its writing down your thoughts before getting ready for the day. Write down your fears, worries, regrets, irritations, and any other feelings typically perceived as ‘negative.’ It’s important to acknowledge these exist, and not just ignore them and pretend like they’re not there.

Then, write down all the positive attributes you feel like you have. All of them, no matter how small you think they are. They’re all important. Look at your list. Isn’t it awesome? Aren’t you awesome? Now you’ve taken away the power of your fears and worries, and you’ve established your self worth and empowered yourself to start the day with a mindset focused on bringing out those strengths.

You may also ritualize letting go of past hurts or experiences that hold you back. This could be in the form of journaling, reading tarot or oracle cards, creating art to tell your story, or meditating, as just a few suggestions.

Creating Your Own Magickal Morning Ritual for Self Love

I can’t and won’t tell you what ritual to create, as I’m not you, and I don’t know what will work with your life. Only you can decide how much or little of this you need, and in what form it will occur.

But, at this point, after reading through the above suggestions or ideas, did anything jump out at you as appealing?

If nothing was appealing, its possible that your self love ritual needs to include more specific things, besides just ‘movement,’ ‘nourishment,’ ‘spiritual work,’ and so on.

Think about how you feel at the end of a day. What are the things you think to yourself ‘I wish I had time for that‘ or ‘I wish I could change this about myself’?

That is the first thing to start with. Whatever you want to do more of, or want to approach differently, should be a ringing bell that perhaps it would benefit from some ritualized self love.

An example of this would be ‘I wish I had more time to read for enjoyment.’

So, then part of your morning ritual might involve waking up 10-15 min earlier and grabbing a book from your nightstand and reading for a bit before doing anything else. Start the day with that little bit of time that’s devoted to just you, and I promise your day will flow much smoother and you’ll begin to see your self worth show up in ways you had not expected.

Or, ‘I wish I could change my body.’ I don’t want to get into the realm of bodyshaming, but coming from a background in nutrition and fitness, having worked with hundreds of women of all ages, this is so ubiquitous these days and believe me, every single one of us can name off numerous things we want to change about our bodies if we could. No matter how body positive we are publicly, we’re still human inside.

This propensity to be unhappy with our bodies has to be acknowledged, instead of continuing to sweep it under the rug and pretend like we’re not all at least a little bit insecure about our bodies, no matter what they look like.

And saying that we should all want to keep them just as they are, no change needed also minimizes the very real emotions and feelings that come along with inhabiting bodies. It makes women feel bad about their bodies, and then makes them feel bad about feeling bad about their bodies, which further works against us.

And, I also refuse to jump on the ‘y0u should love your body no matter what’ train. Y0u should love your body, but if you don’t, that is not a sin, and there is nothing wrong with you. Sometimes loving your body does mean making it healthier, depending on what your definition of healthier is.

Ultimately, you are the one that has to live in your body. Change it or don’t change it based on what you like or want or feel, not anyone else’s opinion of what it should look like, nor whether you should care what it looks like.

Decide if/how you can make changes and what you are willing to give up to make that happen. Some changes are unrealistic and the urge to make the change is based on misogynistic ideals we’ve embraced for women’s bodies and lives, and some are simply impossible based on individual factors.

This type of statement, however, can be transformed into self love in one of two ways:

  1. Is this something you can actually change? And, if so, can the change be attained without risk for your personal health or safety? If the answer to both of those is yes, then consider creating a self love movement/exercise, skincare, diet, medical, or other bodywork ritual geared toward your goals. Always work with a healthcare provider when appropriate.
  2. If this is not something that can realistically be changed (wanting to be taller than you are, wanting a body shape you genetically or anatomically cannot attain, etc), then you might focus on removing the urge to want to change your body and hone in on the aspects of your body that you find spectacular. I worked with a client years ago that was ~ 5’2″ and was obsessed with the idea of having ‘long lean muscles’ like I did at the time. But, I’m 5’9″ and genetically that’s how people in my family are built. After discussing this in great depth before working together and during sessions, she came to the realization that she had the perfect build to develop gorgeous curvy muscles, which she ended up loving even more. Sometimes, we realize that what we originally wanted is not really what is best for us or isn’t going to yield what we think it will. The grass is almost never greener.

Beyond those things, perhaps your self love is changing your mindset or creating a path to growth through the arts, self exploration, or other pursuits that flex your spiritual and psychological muscles in various ways.

You might want to add to your ritual chants or mantras that help you internalize concepts you want to be better at.

For instance, lets say you feel like you are short-tempered with your partner and you want to approach discussions or situations with friction more calmly. You could create a sigil, a chant, or any other written or verbal element to symbolize yourself remaining calm and diffusing your temper when put in those situations.

You could also sit with your favorite houseplant or in your garden, touching nature and breathing deeply to fill yourself with gratitude and the beauty of what the earth has to offer us every day. Visualize drawing energy from those sources if you need it, or returning excess energy if you feel you have started the day a little too tightly wound.

All of these things are merely suggestions for you. Ultimately, decide what elements, if any, you want or need in a morning ritual.

Because this is a morning ritual, it should be based around the things that you feel will put you in the best mindset going into the rest of your day.

Whether that be being more assertive, drawing firmer boundaries, showing compassion, improving your health, helping those less fortunate, learning a new skill, or listening to others instead of doing all the talking, decide what you want this ritual to provide you with, and craft its elements accordingly.

As long as you are devoting that time, no matter how long or short, to yourself and practicing an act that you consider to have the intention of self love, it can help to grow and heal you spiritually and emotionally as you are consistent.

Personal empowerment is everything, and being who you want to be is at the root of this ritual self love practice.

magickal uses of iron

Pretty much everything in the natural or mundane world has a real or symbolic use or meaning in the magickal world as well. Metals are no exception.

Magickal History of Iron

First, know that to our ancestors and the ancients, iron was often considered a gift from the gods, as the first iron used by humans to make items was actually taken from meteorites that landed on Earth. The ancients did not know that the Earth actually contains a LOT of iron.

Because of that, iron was, at one time, actually more valuable than other metals we consider precious, such as gold or silver.

Iron was used fairly regularly in craftmanship, but it is difficult to know exactly when it came into regular use in human civilization, as it rusts and corrodes much more easily than other metals we typically find in archeological sites, and is, therefore, often hard to find in ancient artifacts.

The earliest records of the use of iron by humans date to about 5000 B.C., but it wasn’t until the beginning of the aptly named ‘Iron Age’ that iron deposits were discovered and humans learned how to smelt it, and it became far more cost-effective to use in weaponry and other goods, around 1300 B.C.

Magickal or Spiritual Associations of Iron

Now that you know that little bit of history, especially pertaining to iron’s supposed divine origins, it may make more sense why you see or read about tools or items made of iron used in rituals, given its precious meaning and limited availability in antiquity.

  • considered to be of divine origin by the Egyptians
  • Lodestone, a naturally occurring oxide of iron, is magnetic, aiding sailors as a compass before compasses were invented
  • its magnetic properties can be used in magick to ‘attract’ what you want
  • because iron is responsible for carrying oxygen in the blood (as part of the ‘heme’ molecule), it is critical for human life, and an integral symbol of our life force, blood
  • iron is also considered to be the ‘life force’ of the Earth, due to how much iron is buried in our planet, and its magnetic effects on all life on the planet
  • iron is said to be magickal in part because it can withstand both an extremely hot fire and freezing cold
  • horseshoes made of iron were used by hanging on one’s door to repel unwanted ghosts and evil spirits (but also thought to repel witches; its more likely that the iron was used to repel curses or the evil eye)
  • iron was (and still is sometimes) used in iron bars around cemeteries and prisons to ‘contain’ the ghosts and spirits of the inhabitants (or in the case of prisons, previous living inhabitants)
  • It is also thought that iron bars and gates keep ‘negative’ or ‘bad’ energy contained within a space
  • because of its aforementioned protective properties, iron boxes, or even cauldrons, have been used in magickal practices to contain dark, negative, or malevolent energies
  • its commonly said that fairies do not like iron, or are repelled by it, but because of the large amount of naturally occurring iron found in the earth, its more likely that fairies are actually repelled by iron that has been corrupted by man (steel, or any of the other amalgams or composites we typically use)

So, while iron certainly has some magickal symbolism, it is also considered a desirable material from which to make magickal tools, such as blades/athames, dishes, implements, cauldrons, and other containers.

7 ways to use coffee in your magick

I don’t know about you, but I definitely worship the dark god of the brew. The coffee paraphernalia in my home definitely outnumbers the alcohol-related paraphernalia. And I had this weird thought the other day, while I was downing my ritual strong, black tonic.

So, I started googling and it turns out I’m certainly not the first to wonder if coffee can be used in magick annd spells.

Magickal Properties of Coffee Beans

First, coffee and coffee beans have been used for centuries, maybe millennia, in Afro-Caribbean practices as offerings to both ancestors and deities/spirits. The coffee bean’s inherent energetic properties would make it a choice offering that spirits would highly prize, I imagine.

And, even though I am not of that ancestry, I do have ancestors who drank A LOT of coffee and would appreciate the recognition of such. This is more a personal tribute or offering than a cultural one, obviously.

Many people offer ancestors things they enjoyed in life, such as cigarettes, candy (my Grandma B loves Lifesavers, for real), and alcohol, so coffee is no different in that respect.

If, however, you are working with a deity or spirit of that cultural path, or one with strong ties to regions or peoples who grew/grow and produce coffee beans, coffee beans could certainly be considered a smart offering them.

Reading someone’s coffee grounds has also been done across the globe, similar to reading someones tea leaves, as a form of divination.

You can also use the dark, smooth surface of a cup of coffee for scrying, just like a black mirror.

Spell work

Coffee is said to have purifying and banishing properties. This includes in any form, apparently, and it can be used in the form of a purifying bath or even burning the grounds as incense to clear a space or a person.

Because coffee is said to enhance alertness when we drink it, it can be used symbolically or in place of (or in addition to) a crystal to enhance or boost meditative practices.

Cleansing items such as crystals, magickal tools, and divination decks! Putting those items in a bowl or bag of coffee beans (or grounds) or placing beans around your tools (I have put some inside the tarot card bags I keep my decks in) can allow the beans to remove negative vibes, blockages, creative obstacles, and unwanted energies.

Add coffee grounds to your spell work to either give it a boost of energy or speed up the effects or outcome (especially if you have already worked a spell and it seems to be working too slow for you).

Add already-brewed coffee to a cleaning solution to ward off or remove unwanted spirits or ghosts, also allegedly works as a banishing ward if added to black salt across thresholds.

magick for the waning moon

now that the full moon last week has passed us, we’re approaching the waning moon, which will technically take place on the 14th (today) and through 1-2 days before the new moon.

what kind of magick is best on the waning moon?

think of this phase of the moon as ‘going away’ or ‘getting lesser’ as the visible part of the moon from earth shrinks until we reach the new moon.

during this phase, destructive magick, or magick in which we get rid of, clear out, clean, banish, rid ourselves of, or otherwise break down, cut loose, and leave behind is the name of the game.

here are some things to consider with this waning moon, as it is currently going to be in pisces as of today, then aries on the 17th, and finally it will move into taurus on the 19th, before entering gemini on the actual new moon.

to add to those brief positions, there are also 3 planets going retrograde this month: saturn, venus (13th), and jupiter.

re-evaluate things and people

  • negative or harmful self thoughts
  • toxic relationships
  • emotional vampires
  • overflowing closets
  • dust bunnies
  • excess stuff you just aren’t going to use, admit it
  • self-destructive habits (excess drinking, binge eating, blowing off exercise)

set powerful intentions

this is also a great time to replace those things you’re cutting out or getting rid of with positive, affirming, and self-loving mantras, thoughts, and routines.

this can also include establishing and enforcing boundaries, for yourself and others

the waning moon is perfect for tough love.

working on your shadow self

the waning moon, plus the energy of saturn retrograde, is a really really fantastic opportunity to do some deep work on your shadow self.

i know this is something that has been on my list for some time, and i’ve been waiting for this part of the moon’s cycle, as well as some important transits to my natal chart in late May to begin to really chip away at retained anger, hurt, and things that hold me back.

i haven’t really written extensively on the shadow self, but here is a great guide if you want to read more about it.

this can help you address creative blocks, self-esteem blocks, blocks you are experiencing in your magickal practice, professional blocks, relationship patterns, and so much more. there are even people who claim they have healed from complex health problems by simply working on their shadow self.

how to use this energy in daily practice during the waning moon

there might be one thing or many things you want to work on letting go of during this waning moon. i find its helpful to make a list of the things i know i need to work on, or want to work on. then i go through and journal for a bit on some or all of them.

just free write everything that comes to mind, word vomit onto the page. your thoughts, feelings, emotions, impulses, intuitive inputs all come together to paint a picture of this problem or issue you’re working on.

some of these things may stand out as important, yet you need more guidance. consider consulting your tarot or oracle deck, or a trained reader if you do not feel comfortable yourself, to ask how you can overcome this.

with destructive magick, one of my favorite workings is to burn a written representation of something i am letting go. so you might write down ‘using alcohol as a crutch when i feel upset with my partner’, for instance.

once you have identified a solution that suits your problem, state out loud the thing or habit you are letting go, and what you intend to do in its place or instead of it, or perhaps what boundary you are setting to prevent it from happening again.

burn the scrap of paper, as you visualize the thing or habit leaving your body and mind and drifting away in the smoke of the ashes (open a window, let that bad habit leave!).

that’s just one example, but there are many out there. i love to use a spell oil, too, such as release, the one i’ve blended for this exact purpose of letting things (or people) go. i feel that it really amplifies my will and my outcomes are so much more effective.

friday: freya’s day

there are quite a few reasons to love friday, and i’m not here to trivialize any of them, but just want to give a shout out to a particularly awesome goddess, freya, for whom the day is named.

now, before some dude in the back raises his hand and goes ‘ackchuallllyyyy,’ let’s clarify something that’s occasionally disputed and debated about freya, frigg, and frija.

friday, the 5th day of the week in the original calendar, is named after frija, a goddess of the germanic mythology specific to the norse. she was a goddess of the vanir, and later, the aesir.

at some point, which historians disagree on, frija became either freya, who was also called frigg in some accounts, or frija became two distinct goddesses (freya and frigg) that actually had almost identical traits, character, history, behavior, and stories.

i’m really not here to debate this, and personally think it matters not. the goddess, the divine feminine energy which underpins the birth of all life in the universe, is both freya and frigg, aphrodite, mami wata, kali, hecate, and ishtar (and all the others – you get my point).

what form she takes to me shouldn’t matter to you, and vice versa. how we honor her, speak to her, and care for her earth is the bottom line here.

so onto friday and freya

if you’re not super familiar with freya, i would encourage you to read widely, as she’s a very interesting incarnation of the goddess. this won’t be an exhaustive account but here are the details:

  • day of the week: friday
  • planet: venus
  • associations: love, beauty (even to include self-worth), particularly sexuality and fertility; fine material p0sessions; fertility of the land; war; death; protector of abused women;
  • animals: cats, falcon, horses
  • symbols: honey, amber, gold, mead (a drink made from honey), fine chocolates, gold necklaces especially; fine wine; sweets

other associations of freya:

she is often thought of as the leader of the valkyries, but this is not quite correct, as the valkyries take the souls of the fallen to valhalla, while freya has first choice of the slain in battle, whom she carries home to sessrumnir, in folkvangr, and the rest are taken to valhalla in the afterlife.

she owns, or embodies, depending on who you ask, the magic of the gods and goddesses and has the power to take it from other gods and goddesses if she deems it necessary. referred to as seidr, the ancient norse magickal tradition of shamanism and magick, which came from the vanir gods.

my personal journey with freya

at some point in the last few months, my intuition has begun to flow back to me, filling me with purpose again, inspiring me with ideas, and giving me back a passion for life, creating, and connecting. i suppressed it and ignored it for many years, as i denied who i really was inside and out in order to be someone else for others (i was a horribly inauthentic person, IMO).

until recently, however, i really hadn’t connected my spirit and inspiration with a specific manifestation of the divine feminine, only that i could tell she was there, in me, around me, and encouraging me. she was helping me heal old wounds and forgive myself for past grievances.

as i continued to listen and have conversations, it came to me one day while meditating and seeking guidance that it was in the form of freya that she had been reaching out to me all along. i can’t explain how i knew, but i knew. if you’ve had this experience with the goddess, you just know. she tells you what you’re ready to learn when you’re ready to learn it.

i don’t know if it has to do with heritage, as my ancestors are heavily germanic and of norse heritage, and perhaps i more easily identify with that presentation, or it could be for other reasons. and i don’t think its important, really, why.

she moved me to tears. i cried, not out of sadness, but an overwhelming connection to something bigger than myself. to the love that appeared and surrounded me and told me i would be okay and it was time to heal and move on. i’m honestly weepy right now writing this, as it shook me to my core (in a good way).

she finally gave me the power to give myself that permission to forgive, to love me, and to see my full worth. i felt like a blubbering idiot sitting there pouring out all the pain, but at no point did i feel like she was angry, upset, or discouraging. she was forgiving and kind.

and so, through my work and efforts, i have found that her love of beauty, love, and fine things has been an inspiration for what i do and the things i create, in order to honor the contribution she has made to my life. she particularly has interest in the deep beauty of all things created (human or through nature).

every time i see a breathtaking sight of nature, a beautiful flower newly bloomed in the garden, taste the rich flavors of food from the land, and feel deeply loved by my partner, i’m reminded what i have been given and i silently thank her, as i am grateful for every single opportunity i have been handed.

spell oils: launching this friday in the bwitch shop

so, i had hoped to write this post to announce a total of 5 new spell oils available this friday in our shop. i have been toiling in the lab the last 2 months to perfect these and they are sooooo ready to go!

but, alas, due to a delay on the part of my label printer (and i can’t completely throw them under the bus, i mean, there’s a pandemic right now), i won’t have my normal labels until after May 20th.

faced with the option of not even launching for another 3 weeks, or launching and using another label printer than can get me labels printed faster, but for a slightly higher price, i went with option 2.

so, instead of launching all 5 spell oils, i have decided to prioritize these 3:

love spell

love spell is for any spell involving love, commitment, self-love, passion, or even sex magick. this is to inspire and instill love, deep and wonderful as it can be. it’s emotional, gripping, and fluid. you can get caught right up in this bliss in a bottle.

it has floral top notes of rose and lilac, both known for their magickal properties of love and romance, followed by rich high-vibe ylang ylang and vanilla, and finishing off with spicy cloves and musk, to really seal the deal.

love spell also works awesome as a perfumed body oil, to get yourself or someone else in the mood. its a deeply sensual scent!

this is a spell oil for all forms of earthy magick. whether you are planning to actually work in forest, or planting an herb garden, or any other kind of green magic, forest magic, herb magic, even kitchen magic.

this will focus your intent and will so powerfully with its potent elements of cedar, pine, and eaglewood, with vetiver, sandalwood, birch, and fern, too. its got notes of fresh dirt, cloves, smoke, and grass, to cement the experience and call in all those energies to your spell.

it perfectly captures the energy of the forest and the earth and takes you right to the woods anytime you need to go.

it is a super earthy, woody scent.

and the best part? if your partner starts wearing it as a beard oil like mine did, you will spontaneously start wanting to roleplay lumberjack fantasies

and then finally, release.

i’ll be honest, this one wasn’t initially my favorite of the collection. not because it doesn’t smell good, but because, you know, we tend to think of love spells and such as flashy or trendy, but we tend to forget all about how much more important it can be for us to let shit go.

and that is what release is for. this is the perfect complement to any new moon or waxing moon spells you’re doing, anything involving destructive magick, or letting go of people, places, things, emotions, habits, negativity and so forth.

i quickly found myself applying it every morning before meditating, as it really helped me clear my mind and focus. i found my daily tarot card pulls were far more intuitive and i was able to just be intuitive so much easier while using this spell oil, which was such a profoundly surprising and welcome outcome, frankly.

so, while i call it release, because that is its intent, it is so. much. more. its been like therapy in a bottle for me, for real.

what’s in it?

besides just pure magick, there are heavy top notes of jasmine and sandalwood to help you open up and prepare to release, myrrh and cedarwood for protection, but also purification, ginseng – master healing root is like a bristle brush for your mind and soul, and thyme, honeysuckle, and orange leave you with that squeaky clean feeling.

you couldn’t release more if you poured fabuloso all over yourself đŸ˜‰

how do you use these spell oils?

each spell oil itself is blended with all the elements needed to make a spell work (whether its a love spell, earth magick, or a release spell of some kind), apart from just your specific intention.

you can use them alone or in combination with anything else (other objects, oils, candles, etc). each small artisan batch is infused with powerful intention by myself to help guide the energy of the elements within it.

the spell oils also come with a magickal element infused within, such as rose petals, cedar leaves, or honeysuckle, plus a magickal charm instilled with the energy as well, which you can keep long after the oil is gone.

they can also be worn as scented body oils for every day wear, or special occasions. i sometimes to just wear them to lift my mood because they really do make you stop and close your eyes for a moment, while you’re mind is taken elsewhere, away from daily monotony and the grind of life.

where/when can you buy them?

this Friday, May 1st they will be live in the bwitch shop at 4pm CST!! bookmark the site or set a reminder. there will be limited stock this first round.

our shop has free shipping on orders of $35 or more, so if you feel compelled to pick up more than one, or other stuff, too, take advantage of that.

i hope (all my fingers are crossed right now) that my label situation will iron itself out in the next week or two, the additional two spell oils (lust spell and fuck me in the forest) will be able to launch together shortly. i know some of you have been dying to try those out and i don’t want to disappoint you (and i have the feeling the oils will definitely not disappoint you)!

if you want to be on the list to get notifications of product launches first, subscribe to our email, because email subscribers get the heads up first on new products before we list on social media!

how to create higher vibe surroundings to be more magickal

if you’re like most people who are drawn to the occult and witchcraft, you’re likely more in tune (or very in tune) with the energy and vibes of people, places, and things around you. call it auras, call it energy, call it vibes, call it what you like, but you can feel it.

and you’ve likely at least unconsciously realized that some people, places, and things are ‘higher vibe’ than others. you go there or hang out with them or are around them and just feel like you’re refilling your cup.

try explaining this to someone who has closed off their intuitive and vibrational self and they’ll think you’re fucking crazy. you’re not crazy and you’re definitely not alone in these observations.

what does this have to do with being magickal?

higher vibes make your vibes higher

some of the smartest people i know in this spiritual pursuit will tell you that science and witchcraft are two studies of the exact same thing, just different perspectives.

and that thing is energy. energy is what holds us (and everything around us) together. its the chemical bonds between the atoms and between those atoms’ electrons, protons, and neutrons.

and some of us feel that energy better than others. and if you are such a person, you’re much more sensitive to your surroundings when they are putting off increased energy, whether good or bad.

in high vibration places, for instance, you can walk in and immediately sense the place. you can sense how old it is, how many people have been there, important events that have imprinted maybe, or maybe you feel deeply inspired, or compelled to take a deep breath to appreciate the view.

or, perhaps conversely, you walk in and immediately want to leave. you can feel negative emotions permeating, or previous negative energies that have existed and left a mark. maybe the people there are what are giving off the negative vibes, or maybe the place itself is. either way, you feel like its draining you, you have to leave, and never come back.

whatever your reaction, you’re picking up on the vibes of the place. and the higher the vibes in a place 0r with a person, the higher your own vibes raise, just by sharing that same energy. if you’re in a good and positive high vibe environment, you’ll not only find you’re more inspired, but usually more productive, and feel better about yourself.

these places stand out to us, and they’re different for many of us, but when we have the opportunity to go spend time somewhere, we usually immediately think of a few places that we intuitively lean toward as our high vibe choices.

make note of this the next time a friend or partner, or even just yourself, asks you ‘hey do you want to go grab a cup of coffee or hang out somewhere?’ what immediately comes to mind? there’s a good chance this is a high vibe place for you.

raising your own vibes to be more magickal

ok so we’ve identified that there are places or people you vibe with more. and hopefully you’ve got a sort of mental list running by now of who or where those are.

the way to use these to build your own magickal self is to strategically be around them more, but with purpose.

if you’ve been going through some ups and downs, or struggle to stay focused, find inspiration, or just need a boost – maybe you’re not that great at replenishing your own energy just now – this may be a great way to do that.*

i’ll use an example. i think we’ve all been to a coffee shop at least somewhere in our travels that just inspired the fuck out of us. like you sat down with your laptop or tablet and started jamming out written or visual content or art, or your brain just switched on and ideas flowed like an open faucet.

instead of this being a coffee shop for you, maybe it was a dusty old book store, or the woods near your grandparents’ house, or a diner downtown.

if you have such a place near you, or one you can get to at least weekly, plan a weekly ‘inspo outing’ and bring all your creative materials, or things to brainstorm with, plus plan on bringing something that you’re going to learn something new (a book, a webinar you’ve been meaning to watch, subscription to an educational website, Nat Geo magazine, whatever). make this an appointment with yourself and keep it.

i like to break up these sessions with a bit of educational stuff first. this gets my brain going and starts to turn on the idea centers. as soon as i find myself reaching for my phone or a notebook to write things down, i move on to creative mode. i write until the ideas stop.

then i go back and start developing some of those ideas a little more. what would it take to make this one come to fruition? can i do some market research on this one to see if anyone else is doing this yet? how many people are using this as a hashtag right now? which of these do i feel the most passionate about?

you get the idea. use your intuition for what you’re most drawn to, what you feel most passionate about, what you’re noticing as trends from others in your industry or field, or anything else that pulls you or compels you to follow a particular idea.

and then make some of these happen. even if they’re not things you’re planning to turn into a business, just create. the more you’re pouring your creative spirit into things you find important, the higher your own vibes will be.

raise the vibes of your own environment

now that we’ve found an external source of high vibes, what about just bringing up the vibes of our own environments?

this can be done through simple things like changing the colors in our rooms, adding plants, improving lighting, opening blinds or curtains, redistributing furniture, organizing items, purging unwanted stuff, and so on.

before you do any of that though, make a list of what the things are about your favorite high vibe environments. try to think of the features you find appealing there. is the building old? are there certain smells? is it the crowd noise? textiles or materials they’ve built things with? comfort? temperature? landscaping (indoor and out)? how many of these are things you can simulate or replicate elsewhere?

here’s another intuitive exercise. grab something to write with and start to answer these questions. you may need to sit and think or meditate on some that an answer does not intuitively come to you:

  • what colors are you most drawn to in your wardrobe?
  • what colors are you most drawn to in furniture or decorations in your home?
  • what sounds/music do you prefer to hear when you relax?
  • what sounds/music get you hyped?
  • do you vibe more in environments with a lot of plants?
  • do you vibe more in environments with a lot of books?
  • what scents do you react most to for things like awakening, calming, focus, etc?
  • are there animals you feel drawn to (besides your pets)?
  • are there archetypes that you feel drawn to, or that you identify more with?
  • are there symbols you feel drawn to or inspired by?
  • are there color schemes you find calming or relaxing? invigorating? exciting? inspiring?
  • are there materials (wood, linen, woven, plastic, metals, etc) that you prefer to be around or decorate with?

these are just a start. you can get really detailed with this. but questions like these should get you thinking and visualizing what an ideal high vibe environment would be for you.

perhaps you only have control over your own bedroom if you live with others. or perhaps your entire living space is up to you. whichever it is, if this is a place that you feel is a retreat for you, then it should vibe for you too.

this includes things like:

  • it should be clean (not necessarily perfectly organized, but not dirty; clean floors, walls, windows, baseboards, dust, trash, etc)
  • if you look at your things and feel stressed or overwhelmed, you have too many things or they are in disarray according to your intuitive self; organize things and consider getting rid of stuff you don’t need or use
  • energy of the space (cleanse or clear it regularly, especially if you live with others whose vibes leak over into your personal space or which do not mesh well with your vibes)
  • it represents who you are (culturally, religiously, personally, ethnically, demographically, technologically, magickally, or otherwise)

you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make a space vibe for you. but your money will be randomly spent and potentially wasted if you just buy things that don’t tie into the overarching goal of working together to make your space higher vibe.

a good place to start with ‘how should i change this?’ or ‘what should i buy first?’ is picture what your ideal space would look like if money and time were not obstacles. what are the common themes between this picture and things you’ve already written down?

start with those common themes because, again, your intuitive self is pulling you there.

hopefully this gave you some ideas for incorporating elements into your life and environment that raise your own energy!

*at the time of this writing, the COVID-19 pandemic is still currently going strong in most areas of the US, so understandably, your options for being around people, and even some locations may be limited, so, that in mind, please continue to safely practice social distancing when possible if you choose to seek opportunities in public spaces

how to ground yourself after a spell

have you ever performed a spell and become overwhelmed by the energy you called in or raised, either before or after you focused it toward your intention?

have you ever felt absolutely drained, run over by a bus, a drowned cat, right after a spell?

if these are things you’ve experienced (and i think most of us have or will at some point in our practice), then congratulations, you’re working with powerful energy, but its also a bit imbalanced.

you either are calling up an excess – more than what you need for your particular intention- or you’re sending too much out with your focused intent.

this has happened to me a few times in the last month in the form of tears spilling over uncontrollably after i call in energy.

i don’t mean like i’m sad or angry, there’s just such a focused and intense concentration of energy in me, i’m vibrating so high, and there’s nowhere else for it to go, so it leaks out. its ok, though. i have found that grounding myself has helped immensely, so i’m here to share this for those who need to hear it today.

basic grounding exercise

grounding is simply the act of anchoring yourself to the earth and its energy, where you can balance your own internal energy most easily. humans are on the same wavelength as the planet on which we reside, all being carbon-based, so its our easiest source of balance.

in this exercise you’re either going to give back some of the excess energy you drew in or you’re going to take in a little more energy because you gave too much away during your spell.

refilling your cup

if you’re feeling drained, this is what you’ll do:

  1. sit or stand, soles of your feet on the ground. its most helpful if you do this outdoors, but if that’s not possible, on the ground floor of a building is the next best option, and if you can’t get to that, as close to a ground floor as you can find.
  2. take deep breaths in and out until your heart and mind are calm. picture a blank mind, focus on just one color, whatever that is you choose, and keep it in your mind as your breaths slow and become deeper.
  3. picture the core of the earth, glowing, bright and hot. picture a ray of that energy gradually flowing up toward you, like a river, going through layers of the earth’s crust, dirt, layer by layer.
  4. it reaches the surface and makes contact with the soles of your feet. bring it into you. picture it flowing upward through your legs, your hips, your torso, and now your heart. let it keep going, all the way to your crown.
  5. hold the energy in there as you take a few more deep breaths.
  6. picture the connection with the earth’s source disconnecting, like its cut or turned off. what you’ve taken in is yours now and you’ve let the rest go back to the earth.
  7. take a few more deep breaths here until you feel steady and refilled.

giving a little bit back

if you’ve called in too much energy and are feeling crushed or overwhelmed by it, you’re basically going to envision the opposite of taking in energy:

  1. calm your breathing as much as you can and still your mind to the extent possible.
  2. picture all the energy you’ve called in, slowly condensing into one great glowing ball within you.
  3. pull a small string of it out and let the string flow down your body, through your legs, and through the soles of your feet into the earth.
  4. now send that string down through the layers of the earth, down through the dirt, the crust, the rocks. let it reach the core where it connects to the energy there.
  5. gradually push some of that energy out of you through that string until you feel centered and balanced once again.
  6. let your breathing slow and your mind focus on this until you are no longer feeling overloaded or overwhelmed, and you have reached a state of calm.
  7. picture cutting the string with a pair of scissors. you keep what energy still remains in you, letting that ball start to dissipate and redistribute all throughout your body.
  8. continue to breathe deep here for a few more breaths until you are sure you’re fine.

as with all grounding, this is most effective when you can direct all of your focus to it, like a form of meditative visualization. if you are distracted, this will be less successful, so its best to perform this somewhere reasonably quiet where you can be undisturbed for however long you need to accomplish your grounding.
