goddess spotlight: carmenta

Originally a Greek goddess named Nicostrata, Carmenta was renamed as such as a Roman goddess, where she ruled over childbirth and midwives. She is also invoked for contraceptive purposes for women who wish to avoid pregnancy. She is also a protector of mothers and children.

She is also the goddess of divination and prophecy, and her name comes from the Latin word carmen, which means spell or oracle.

She is also associated with poetry, and writing in general, as she is said to have been who altered 15 of the letters in the Greek alphabet to become the Latin alphabet. She also introduced poetry and music to the early peoples inhabiting what would later become modern-day Italy, and is even said to have laid some of the physical foundations of the city of Rome.

She is the mother of Evander by Hermes.

Also associated with bodies of water, as she was the primary or leader of the Camenae, who were water goddesses or nymphs who ruled over springs and wells, as well as larger bodies of water in and around Rome. Because of this association, she and the other three Camenae (Egeria, Porrima, Postverta), could also be invoked for healing.

7 ways to use coffee in your magick

I don’t know about you, but I definitely worship the dark god of the brew. The coffee paraphernalia in my home definitely outnumbers the alcohol-related paraphernalia. And I had this weird thought the other day, while I was downing my ritual strong, black tonic.

So, I started googling and it turns out I’m certainly not the first to wonder if coffee can be used in magick annd spells.

Magickal Properties of Coffee Beans

First, coffee and coffee beans have been used for centuries, maybe millennia, in Afro-Caribbean practices as offerings to both ancestors and deities/spirits. The coffee bean’s inherent energetic properties would make it a choice offering that spirits would highly prize, I imagine.

Offerings

And, even though I am not of that ancestry, I do have ancestors who drank A LOT of coffee and would appreciate the recognition of such. This is more a personal tribute or offering than a cultural one, obviously.

Many people offer ancestors things they enjoyed in life, such as cigarettes, candy (my Grandma B loves Lifesavers, for real), and alcohol, so coffee is no different in that respect.

If, however, you are working with a deity or spirit of that cultural path, or one with strong ties to regions or peoples who grew/grow and produce coffee beans, coffee beans could certainly be considered a smart offering them.

Divination

Reading someone’s coffee grounds has also been done across the globe, similar to reading someones tea leaves, as a form of divination.

You can also use the dark, smooth surface of a cup of coffee for scrying, just like a black mirror.

Spell work

1.

Coffee is said to have purifying and banishing properties. This includes in any form, apparently, and it can be used in the form of a purifying bath or even burning the grounds as incense to clear a space or a person.

2.

Because coffee is said to enhance alertness when we drink it, it can be used symbolically or in place of (or in addition to) a crystal to enhance or boost meditative practices.

3.

Cleansing items such as crystals, magickal tools, and divination decks! Putting those items in a bowl or bag of coffee beans (or grounds) or placing beans around your tools (I have put some inside the tarot card bags I keep my decks in) can allow the beans to remove negative vibes, blockages, creative obstacles, and unwanted energies.

4.

Add coffee grounds to your spell work to either give it a boost of energy or speed up the effects or outcome (especially if you have already worked a spell and it seems to be working too slow for you).

5.

Add already-brewed coffee to a cleaning solution to ward off or remove unwanted spirits or ghosts, also allegedly works as a banishing ward if added to black salt across thresholds.

5 ways to use dirt in spells

we’re probably all familiar with the concept of gathering graveyard dirt for magickal purposes.

but are there other ways to soil, whether from specific locations or not, in spells?

bwitch, please. you know i’m about to tell you.

graveyard dirt

this magickal element goes waaaaay back in a few types of magickal practice. its been used in hoodoo, folk magic, wicca, various forms of necromancy, and general magickal practice/unaffiliated with a sect or defined path.

graveyard dirt can be a general element for protection, guardianship, and even love spells.

graveyard dirt can also be used to work with specific spirits, ancestors, or energies.

specific graveyard dirt has been used for many centuries. what i mean by specific graveyard dirt is dirt taken from a specific location (the entrance/gate) in the graveyard or a specific grave itself (a priest, a dead ancestor, a public figure, etc).

depending on what you’re planning to work in your spell, you may want to consider what the energy of the location from which you are gathering dirt feels like to you, and from where your graveyard dirt is collected.

i know there are a number of places online where you can purchase graveyard dirt, and even that which purports to be from specific graves or symbolic locations, but i tend to be of the mindset that if i didn’t collect it myself, then i can’t know for sure that’s where it came from. and i certainly don’t want someone’s backyard dirt in my spells when its supposed to be dirt from the grave of Elvis or something, right?

garden dirt

this is one of my faves for spells that require growth, nurturing, or manifesting something. dirt from your garden, or from that of someone who is a particularly skilled gardener/has an excellent green thumb, makes a fantastic tool here.

you can also take a bit of dirt from someone’s garden who has prosperous, healthy plants and use it in a spell, mixing it with dirt from your own garden, asking for the same blessings and prosperity in your own garden. if nancy’s azaleas are the envy of the neighborhood, that doesn’t mean you can’t be, too.

garden dirt would be excellent in a love spell or as a place to ‘plant’ charms or magickal symbols of your spells.

curses using someone’s dirt

you can curse someone by gathering dirt from their property, preferably close to their home, or, if you cannot do that, from dirt they have left a footprint in (make sure its actually their footprint).

make your request, intentions, and will known during your spell and place the dirt according to how you want it to affect the intended person.

this might include placing it somewhere with noxious odors, loud noises, a landfill, flushing it down the toilet (particularly if you want that person to leave you alone), or any other place you think is fitting for the curse.

cleansing magickal items

placing things in the dirt or earth has long been used as a way to remove unwanted energies, or energy lingering on an item that just doesn’t feel right to you. this might be something you think is cursed, something you’ve acquired from someone you don’t like or trust, or really any other thing that you just don’t feel you vibe with right now, but you hope to use it eventually in your spell work.

burying something in the earth allows the earth to take back and gradually dissipate the energy of the object, redistributing it. after time, the object is returned to a neutral, or even positively charged, state, and now safe to bring into your home or sacred space.

i have used this once before, when i found that even smoke clearing did not quite remove a residual ickiness from an object i bought at a junk shop. as long as the item is waterproof, burying it in the earth should be fine for a few days or even up to a month.

calling in faery and forest beings’ energy

dirt from the forest can be suuuuper charged with energy. its one of my fave places to gather a bit from, particularly from spots that really vibe for you. there’s a waterfall in a nearby nature sanctuary that just really feeds the atmosphere around it with positivity and magick, for instance.

using forest dirt would be a great element for all types of green magic, as well as working with any of the woody spirits or those commonly associated with the forest or woodland areas.

and, you could even get as specific as which type of tree or plant you gather the dirt from around, or under which type of moon you gather it.

spell oils: launching this friday in the bwitch shop

so, i had hoped to write this post to announce a total of 5 new spell oils available this friday in our shop. i have been toiling in the lab the last 2 months to perfect these and they are sooooo ready to go!

but, alas, due to a delay on the part of my label printer (and i can’t completely throw them under the bus, i mean, there’s a pandemic right now), i won’t have my normal labels until after May 20th.

faced with the option of not even launching for another 3 weeks, or launching and using another label printer than can get me labels printed faster, but for a slightly higher price, i went with option 2.

so, instead of launching all 5 spell oils, i have decided to prioritize these 3:

love spell

love spell is for any spell involving love, commitment, self-love, passion, or even sex magick. this is to inspire and instill love, deep and wonderful as it can be. it’s emotional, gripping, and fluid. you can get caught right up in this bliss in a bottle.

it has floral top notes of rose and lilac, both known for their magickal properties of love and romance, followed by rich high-vibe ylang ylang and vanilla, and finishing off with spicy cloves and musk, to really seal the deal.

love spell also works awesome as a perfumed body oil, to get yourself or someone else in the mood. its a deeply sensual scent!

wood

this is a spell oil for all forms of earthy magick. whether you are planning to actually work in forest, or planting an herb garden, or any other kind of green magic, forest magic, herb magic, even kitchen magic.

this will focus your intent and will so powerfully with its potent elements of cedar, pine, and eaglewood, with vetiver, sandalwood, birch, and fern, too. its got notes of fresh dirt, cloves, smoke, and grass, to cement the experience and call in all those energies to your spell.

it perfectly captures the energy of the forest and the earth and takes you right to the woods anytime you need to go.

it is a super earthy, woody scent.

and the best part? if your partner starts wearing it as a beard oil like mine did, you will spontaneously start wanting to roleplay lumberjack fantasies

release

and then finally, release.

i’ll be honest, this one wasn’t initially my favorite of the collection. not because it doesn’t smell good, but because, you know, we tend to think of love spells and such as flashy or trendy, but we tend to forget all about how much more important it can be for us to let shit go.

and that is what release is for. this is the perfect complement to any new moon or waxing moon spells you’re doing, anything involving destructive magick, or letting go of people, places, things, emotions, habits, negativity and so forth.

i quickly found myself applying it every morning before meditating, as it really helped me clear my mind and focus. i found my daily tarot card pulls were far more intuitive and i was able to just be intuitive so much easier while using this spell oil, which was such a profoundly surprising and welcome outcome, frankly.

so, while i call it release, because that is its intent, it is so. much. more. its been like therapy in a bottle for me, for real.

what’s in it?

besides just pure magick, there are heavy top notes of jasmine and sandalwood to help you open up and prepare to release, myrrh and cedarwood for protection, but also purification, ginseng – master healing root is like a bristle brush for your mind and soul, and thyme, honeysuckle, and orange leave you with that squeaky clean feeling.

you couldn’t release more if you poured fabuloso all over yourself đŸ˜‰

how do you use these spell oils?

each spell oil itself is blended with all the elements needed to make a spell work (whether its a love spell, earth magick, or a release spell of some kind), apart from just your specific intention.

you can use them alone or in combination with anything else (other objects, oils, candles, etc). each small artisan batch is infused with powerful intention by myself to help guide the energy of the elements within it.

the spell oils also come with a magickal element infused within, such as rose petals, cedar leaves, or honeysuckle, plus a magickal charm instilled with the energy as well, which you can keep long after the oil is gone.

they can also be worn as scented body oils for every day wear, or special occasions. i sometimes to just wear them to lift my mood because they really do make you stop and close your eyes for a moment, while you’re mind is taken elsewhere, away from daily monotony and the grind of life.

where/when can you buy them?

this Friday, May 1st they will be live in the bwitch shop at 4pm CST!! bookmark the site or set a reminder. there will be limited stock this first round.

our shop has free shipping on orders of $35 or more, so if you feel compelled to pick up more than one, or other stuff, too, take advantage of that.

i hope (all my fingers are crossed right now) that my label situation will iron itself out in the next week or two, the additional two spell oils (lust spell and fuck me in the forest) will be able to launch together shortly. i know some of you have been dying to try those out and i don’t want to disappoint you (and i have the feeling the oils will definitely not disappoint you)!

if you want to be on the list to get notifications of product launches first, subscribe to our email, because email subscribers get the heads up first on new products before we list on social media!

a spell for creating a protection charm

first of all, i need to say that i don’t think most people need a protection amulet or charm. and i tend to agree with statements like this one below, from notable author Scott Cunningham:

“I’m often asked if I have a good luck charm, a piece of jewelry, an amulet, or some other power object that I always have in my possession. I don’t.

This often comes as a surprise, but it is part of my magical philosophy. If I determined that one piece of jewelry (a ring, pendant, quartz crystal point, ect) was my power object, my link with the Gods, my assurance of good luck, I’d be crushed if it was stolen, lost, misplaced or otherwise parted company with me.

p. 52, Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner. Llewelyn Publications, 2004

so, i tend to agree with this statement. why put all my eggs in one basket and rely on an extrinsic object or symbol when my power, energy, and magic is ultimately what’s responsible for my protection or power?

but….

what if you did want to make a personal protection charm?

what if its for someone else who just needs a little boost to their confidence that they are not alone in their struggles?

what if it’s reassuring to you?

what if you are going somewhere that you feel requires a greater amount of particular protection and you just want to make sure…

there is nothing wrong with creating a personal protection charm or object, especially if you do it right and with the appropriate intentions.

what you will need:

  • the object you wish to imbue with protective energy (this could be jewelry, a piece of clothing, a keychain, a small pouch of herbs or flowers, really anything you feel like you can carry with you for these purposes)
  • a white candle
  • a red candle
  • a handful (1/4 cup) herbs, ideally dried: basil and/or mugwort (you can use one or both)
  • a cauldron or other heat-safe dish/vessel
  • a handful of honeysuckle (can be freshly picked or dried)
  • a stone or glass bowl
  • 1 cup freshly boiled spring water (ideally boil this on your stovetop, but a microwave may do in a pinch)

the spell

  • cleanse yourself (bathe, shower, use ritual purification oils, etc)
  • cleanse your space (burn an herb bundle, incense, or use a bell or other sound to remove unwanted energy and fill it with your own)
  • have all of your items on your altar or ritual workspace before beginning
  • pour the freshly boiled water into the bowl
  • add the honeysuckle to the water and wait approximately 5-6 minutes until it has cooled enough to touch it without scalding your skin
  • light the candles with a match or other candle
  • hold the herbs in your hand for a moment, feeling their vibrations and melding your own power to that of the herbs. it may be beneficial at this point to meditate briefly on any specifics that you want this protection spell and object to cover (health, ill will, a threatening person, physical harm, accidents, etc); place the herbs in the cauldron or heat-safe vessel
  • light the herbs and let the smoke waft gently; breathe it in and out, forming a picture of what your intended protective outcome would be as regards this charm or object
  • hold your protection object or charm in your left hand and say out loud:

white of bone

red of heart

heat of fire

life of earth

bestow upon this [ring, charm, amulet, etc]

protection of the whole

protection of the bearer

protection of the wearer

repel malice, harm, and ill

protect the bearer ever still

  • as you finish the incantation, pick up the bowl of honeysuckle and hot water and gently use it to douse the flames/embers in the herb bowl a few drops at a time
  • hold the protection object over the smoke and steam rising from the doused herbs and let it be enveloped until all the embers have gone out and no more smoke or steam remains

if you are intending to give this to someone else, keep it in a safe place such as a cedar box or velvet-lined bag until you can give it to the intended recipient.

if you plan to use it for your own protection, wear it on your person or carry it with you, or perhaps hang it over the threshold of your door, place it in your vehicle or otherwise in a place where you feel it will be the most efficacious to your needs.

how to use magical sounds during spells and rituals

i know of witches who practice their craft without spoken words and those who shout their intentions and incantations as loudly as possible.

i think either way is fine, as long as your intent is pure and communicated clearly.

but what about other sounds in spells and rituals?

some of the things that can be used to produce meaningful or symbolic sounds during spells and rituals are:

  • bells
  • gongs
  • flutes
  • cymbals
  • clapping
  • finger snaps
  • music (pre-recorded)
  • other instruments
  • humming
  • anything else you want, really

sound can represent several things during a spell or ritual. it could be symbolic of an element, it could represent an animal, person, or thing, it could simply amplify your intent, or it could be used to increase and amplify your energy during the process.

let’s take a look at the first part of that statement – how sounds can represent elements, because this is really interesting and i’ve found that in this context, sound really enhances my spell work.

earth

  • percussion is ruled by the earth sign
  • clapping
  • drums/drumming
  • tapping
  • these are associated with fertility, career, money

water

  • bells are associated with the water element/sign
  • in addition to a brass bell, try hand bells or blowing on a windchime for something different
  • you could also use actual water sounds, like a small fountain or pouring water from one vessel to another
  • these are associated with healing, fertility, friendship, psychic powers, love, beauty, and happiness

air

  • naturally, air-based instruments like flutes, reed instruments, and brass instruments are associated with the air element
  • whistling
  • singing
  • humming
  • these are associated with business, intellectual pursuits, education/learning, and thoughts

fire

  • stringed instruments like violin, viola, cell, bass violin, harb, lyre, and dulcimer are associated with the fire element
  • think of the reverberating sound of the string’s vibration after being drawn or plucked and the flames moving outward from a central spark
  • these are associated with creativity, passion, sensuality, sexuality, enlightenment, inspiration, self-confidence, and energy

how do you incorporate sound into a spell or ritual?

i don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to do this, and i’ve given some suggestions based on what has worked for me in the past, but play around with these and see what feels and works the best for you.

open your spell or ritual with a sound or sounds to call in the element(s) you wish to work most closely with; example: *slowly drumming on an overturned pot or cup* “i call the element of earth and ask its energy to lend me…”

you can also use a sound throughout a spell or ritual, marking pauses or to emphasize important words or statements; example: *plucking a harp string and letting it vibrate* “goddess of inspiration, guide my work” *pluck the string once again* “reveal my path through your wise counsel” *pluck the string once again* …and so forth.

use a sound as a background noise or foundational element in your spell or ritual, symbolizing the element most important during your work; example: playing a recording of wood flute notes during your spell or ritual to enhance the energy of the air element.

there are probably many more ways to use sounds during spell work or rituals, and the ones mentioned here are only a few suggestions specific to the elements. sounds like chanting and humming can also be used to build one’s own energy, or that of a larger group. if you have more ideas and suggestions, share them! i’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

a (self) love spell

ugh, babes, how many of you are spending all this time at home, isolating, introspecting, and picking yourselves apart?

a little self-honesty is important, for sure, but there’s a fine line between being honest with ourselves and being horrible to ourselves, right?

i’m usually totally fine with who i am, where i am, what i look like, how i feel, and where i’m going…99% of the time. but lately, i’ve been having trouble resisting the pull of self-criticism and internally imposed limitations. maybe just all this time i can’t spend doing other things or maybe that particularly rough mercury retrograde, or who knows.

so i created this spell to use with my love spell oil and i have to be honest. i cried this morning repeating this to myself, admitting all the years i wasn’t very nice to myself and said terrible things to myself because, well, that’s what we’re taught as young girls all through life…you’re never good enough.

but i am good enough. you are good enough and we are good enough.

what you will need:

  • a crystal(s) of choice (i used rose quartz and smoky quartz)
  • an oil or blend of oils of choice; i blend special spell oils, but a simple rose essential oil in a carrier base such as almond or jojoba will do the trick nicely if you have nothing else on hand
  • a quiet place

dab the oil on your chest, arms, forehead or any other area you want to focus. simply anointing yourself just over your heart is enough. do not rub the oil in yet, let it run as it will over your skin while you repeat the following, as many times as you feel you need:

“i see me now

in present form

and recognize

how my words have harmed

from this point

i look upon me with loving eyes

all past doubt

and self-hate dies

i am glowing, beautiful

from crown to toes

through my veins

only this love flows”

as you recite this, picture a glowing orb, whatever color represents healing and love to you, beginning from the crystals you hold and radiating into your hands, then flowing up your arms, into your heart, and downward throughout your torso, hips, reaching your legs, knees, and finally your feet. as it does this, it also flows upward through your chest, neck and head, covering your crown. you are glowing with this love.

hold this sensation for several deep breaths and forgive your past harsh words. look at yourself through your third eye and see how beautiful you really are. y0u are a gift.

feel free to open yourself, let emotions out, purge them if you need to. now is the time to let them go. the full moon this week should be a time of growth and anything holding you back does not serve you anymore.

once you feel you are finished and your words have indicated your intent, rub the oil into your skin, taking deep breaths in and out. this is the new you. love this version of you unconditionally.
